| We start our tour
heading northbound into the state of Jalisco, which borders Colima. Along the
way we see the lush, flourishing countryside and fertile land dense with
tropical vegetation. Our destination is
|
| Here we have a lagoon shielded by a jungle of mangroves that help protect the coast from erosion and storm damage, while providing a habitat for a multitude of water birds, such as herons, stilts, plovers, egrets and cormorants. |
|
But mainly the lagoon is
crocodile territory. The crocodile population is approaching 150, ranging from juveniles
to mature adults, measuring in length of up to |
|
You can see these magnificent animals up "up close and personal" living in their natural habitat. Sometimes, the crocodiles block the road, and you have to veer around them. |
|
From La Manzanilla, the tour returns back south to Barra de Navidad, a quaint farming and fishing village, built on a sandbar, with a picturesque lagoon on one side and the crashing sea on the other. |
|
See the long, curved beach that stretches for miles, which, if walked, will take you to the neighboring town of Melaque. Take the opportunity to stroll along Barra's cobblestone and brick streets, a perfect place to shop, with an open air market as well. |
The
many stores, as well as restaurants and bars make this excursion very enjoyable.
Take your pick of dozens of local places to have lunch or drinks (at your
expense), before heading back to Manzanillo.
